WHO ARE THESE
COLUMBIA COUNTY DEMOCRATS, ANYWAY?
We are your friends and neighbors. Regardless of our political affiliation, we are all Americans. We all share the same fundamental goals and values. We all want:
• A safe place to live and raise our families
• A fair chance to succeed through hard work
• A nurturing community
• The liberty to pursue happiness
We all feel a responsibility to:
• Treat our neighbors fairly
• Give back to the community that has given so much to us
• Leave this world a better place for our children and our children’s children
WHAT DO THE COLUMBIA COUNTY DEMOCRATS BELIEVE?
* We believe in community. We believe we share a common responsibility to keep our communities strong, for our neighbors as well as for ourselves. We depend upon the foundation of our community as much as upon our own hard work for success.
* Government has a vital role to play in keeping our communities strong. We believe a government that is truly by, for, and of the People can help make people’s lives better. Our Party gave the country Social Security, the GI bill, and rural electrification. We continue to work for strong public educational institutions and quality health care for all.
* We believe in fairness and justice. Our Party is working for tax fairness. We take pride in pulling our own weight, but we expect everyone else to do their fair share too. We support closing the corporate tax loopholes that have led to more property taxes for working families and the middle class. We are committed to protecting Social Security. We oppose borrow-and-spend policies that put our debts on the shoulders of our children.
* We believe it is not the role of government to mandate the morality of its citizens – this is the role of our families, our churches, our communities. Our founding fathers wisely limited the power of the government to infringe upon the personal liberty of its citizens by enacting a Bill of Rights. The government does not belong in our homes and our bedrooms and our churches. The government has no business persecuting any group whose pursuit of happiness does not interfere with the rights of others. We support civil rights for all Americans.
* We believe in helping people succeed, not just punishing them for their failures. We believe that supporting women and children before and after birth is the best way to prevent the tragedy of abortion. Punitive laws have the power only to send desperate women into back alleys, not to take away their choice about whether to bring a new life into the world. We support life with the WIC program, Head Start, child-care assistance, and similar helping hands. Love moves mountains; hate closes doors.
* We believe in an honest, open and accountable government. Rich corporations pay millions in campaign contributions, and receive billions in corporate welfare in return. There is no free lunch: either we the people own our electoral process, or else big money does. We support meaningful campaign finance reform.
* We believe we have an obligation to leave a better world for our children. We are failing this crucial test. We can’t eat the fish in our lakes and streams, but we continue to tolerate needlessly high levels of mercury pollution. We must rededicate ourselves to environmental protection, including a commitment to combat global warming.
* We believe the United States is truly the land of the free and the home of the brave. We will not dismantle our freedom out of fear of terrorists. We are proud of the PATRIOT Act reforms being spearheaded by our Senator Russ Feingold.
